24-Hour Prayer Chain
The Prayer of Jabez:
The prayer of Jabez shows us a powerful way we can approach God with our requests. It is not a formulaic prayer to earn anything from God or to twist God’s hand, rather, Jabez’s prayer inspires and challenges us how to call upon God to help accomplish the fulfillment of His promises in our lives.
1 Chronicles 4:10
“Jabez cried out to
the God of Israel, ‘Oh that You would bless me and enlarge my territory!
Let Your hand be with me and keep me from harm so that I will be free from
pain.’ And God granted his request.”
JANUARY: ACKNOWLEDGE WHO GOD IS
1. The very first thing Scripture tells us about Jabez is that he cried to the God of Israel. Jabez states God’s lordship and headship over his life. When you pray, begin by acknowledging who God is!
Why do we need to acknowledge who God is? It is because by acknowledging God, we are directing our gaze and our heart to Him. We correct our perspective. When we have a right view of who our God is, the magnitude of our problems are minimised in comparison. Our own identity becomes known when we acknowledge the nature and character of God. We are also able to effectively call upon the characteristics of God and invoke His promises. When we know God’s true character the way we come to Him in prayer is transformed.
Due to the importance and power of recognising who God is, it begs the question, how much are we aware of who God is?
Ask yourself: Do I know Who I am praying to? Do I know who God is?
If you struggle with these questions, it is okay. God has used His Word to reveal Himself to you. He says He is the Creator (Genesis 1:1), incomparable (1 Samuel 2:2), high and exalted (Isaiah 57:15), holy (Leviticus 11:44), ever-present (Psalm 139:7-8), compassionate and loving (Psalm 116:5), and the list goes on.
Allow yourself some time during this prayer hour to dig deep into the riches of the God you worship. You will find that He will reveal more and more of Himself as you dwell upon His nature and character. In turn, you can pray with a humble spirit centred on knowing who God is, and a heart in rightful posture to receive from Him.
Personal Prayer:
Call Upon the God of Israel
Oh God, You are the Holy One of Israel. You are powerful and mighty and have called us to be set apart- holy for You. Your holiness not only stretches over evil but also leads us in knowledge, justice, mercy, goodness, and love. Lord, your commands reveal your character and we praise you today and ask that you cleanse us and remake us into the image of your Son through the power of your Spirit. In Jesus’ Name, AMEN.
